Like many of our team here at Apex, David came to us not because he was unhappy with his line of work (he had been in finance for 20 years) but because he wanted more and felt that he had hit his ceiling. He traveled extensively across four states, managing 90 locations. In many of these situations, he used his insights into operations, financial reporting, and leadership development to help branch managers develop growth strategies and develop better customer service and sales strategies.
That experience flows right into the way he advises business owners now, and he even has “top three” considerations for both buyers and sellers. The experience of coaching and mentoring also helps him support business owners through one of the most important moments of their lives, whether that be starting the business journey or ending it.
For Buyers:
- Know what you’re looking for
- Be realistic about your strengths (and aware of your weaknesses)
- Stay focused on businesses that align with your passion and skillset
For Sellers:
- Start early
- Understand the value of your business beyond the numbers
- Prepare for life after the sale
“My role,” David says, “is to guide them along the way, whether they are buying or selling, making sure we’re giving aligned strategies, clarity, and support.” He wants them to be happy with the final deal, but more importantly, be set up for what’s next.
What’s next for David? A little less time rushing from place to place, and a little more time enjoying home life — whether that’s family dinners, cheering at his kids’ events, or planning the next family trip. This shift allows him to dedicate even more energy to helping buyers and sellers find the right fit, all while staying closely connected with his family.
When he’s not in Kansas City, you’ll often find David traveling with his family or competing in BBQ contests. What began as a casual hobby has turned into something more — now and then, he hits the road with a team to share Kansas City’s barbecue tradition with nearby communities.
David will be the first to admit that he’s a rookie on our team, but where he’s a veteran is his deep sense of curiosity, which has helped him throughout his professional journey. “Be honest about your goals, patient with the process, and open to professional guidance.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
